Where did you get the idea for your business?
I had been wanting to start a business for so long but I just wasn’t sure what that business was going to be. While at my last job, I was working on some projects and I began working with lots of super creative people who worked for themselves and I thought to myself if they can do it, so can I! I sat on it for a little while and thought about what my skills were. I realised that working with people, connecting people and brands together, generating creative ideas and executing those ideas in a professional and seamless way was where I excelled. So, I decided to start my own agency, Inka Creative, where I could help lots of businesses become better with their communications, branding and customer/brand experience.
How did you get your business started?
I started writing down every idea I had and visualising where I would work, the types of people I would most like to work with and the types of jobs that would make me the happiest. I then started writing down a plan for my website which would be a platform to explain to the world what we do and how we can help. I went to lots of events to soak up information from other people in similar situations then googled everything I could! To start the businesses wasn’t that hard but I wanted to get the branding, copywriting and website right as I know how important it would be for me to look super professional and to make my key messages nice and clear. It took one month from my last day of work to launch the business. I had to teach myself most of it and ask family and friends who knew various things for help but I got there!
What is it that interests you most about working with brands in the lifestyle arena?
Lifestyle brands help to make life more enjoyable and bring happiness and pleasure to everyday experiences. I want to be part of helping people live their lives in the most beautiful way possible, by sharing great lifestyle brands and their own individual offerings around the world.
What lessons have you learned so far on your business journey?
I have learned that everyone you know is a potential business contact in some way. Whether it be now or in the future, it is important to keep good relationships with everyone in your life because you never know how they may be able to help you in some way, one day with business. Whether it be for a client or even your own business. I have also learned that people are just people and to not be afraid of meeting as many of them as you can. I have also found that being generous with these people is worthwhile for so many reasons. It helps you learn, makes you feel pretty good and then it always comes back to you eventually somehow.
What are your top three tips for starting a business?
1. Talk to as many people as possible and ask lots of questions.
2. surround yourself with like-minded people by going to events, meetups, and coffee catch ups.
3. invest time and money into getting your branding and brand positioning right. Don’t underestimate its importance – it is crucial.
