Meet Leigh Williams. Founder of eStore Logistics, Australia’s largest warehousing and order fulfilment provider specialising in servicing online retail. This is his entrepreneurial story.
Where did you get the idea for your business?
I found online retail was growing at a rapid rate. Traditional logistics providers didn’t have a suitable service offering to help many online retailers. This particularly related to those who wanted to outsource their warehousing and order fulfilment operations. This left a massive gap in the logistics market which I identified and acted upon by founding eStore Logistics.
How did you get your business started?
I researched the online retail logistics market and came to understand the state of play. I put together some financial modelling for eStore Logistics, developed custom online retail logistics software, pitched to clients, cash advanced some credit cards, then quit my job.
What lessons have you learned so far on your business journey?
Relationships have been super important to me with eStore Logistics. It’s important to:
- know all of the staff well, no matter what level they are;
- build strong relationships with clients; and,
- get out of the office and mingle with industry people, as it always comes back you to with some sort of benefit, whether it is the following week or years later.
How important for you has it been to have a mentor?
I have a great network from my school at Melbourne High who have been very helpful along the way with eStore Logistics.
What are your top three tips for starting a business?
- Stop talking about it: just do it.
- Financials are important. Model them, model again, and when you think you’re finished, model them again.
- Build strong relationships with everyone. This has been central to my success with eStore Logistics.
