Sports Travel and Events – Marcel Berger

Meet Marcel Berger. Founder and CEO of Mummu Sport, one of the world’s premier sports travel and logistics organisations. This is his entrepreneurial story.

Where did you get the idea for your business?

After working in events, sports management and travel, I found that the existing model for major sports events around the world just didn’t seem to be working anymore. Huge rights fees, paired with under-resourced organising committees, meant that major events were losing money and that stakeholders were paying far too much to travel to events. So, I founded Mummu Sport to introduce a new, better model into the market. It allows sports event organisers to concentrate on the event whilst outsourcing the travel, hospitality, commercial and logistics services to my team at Mummu Sport.

How did you get your business started?

I was the general manager of the global division of Australia’s leading sports travel company. When the then-CEO and myself saw the opportunity to start Mummu Sport, we decided to break away to launch the business together in 2010.

What lessons have you learned so far on your business journey?

Mummu Sport is my fourth business, so I’ve been fortunate to have had experience in start-ups and the challenges that come with building a business from nothing. Mummu Sport, however, started straight away as a global company with clients on four continents, which was a huge learning curve. Now, five years in, we’ve learned how to be more resourceful, to manage risk and to take advantage of opportunities to grow our business.

How important for you has it been to have a mentor?

I’ve had mentors my entire business career, to help challenge my thinking and to give me the support required to make decisions. So, mentors have been extremely important to me. I now have an advisory board, whom I meet with each month to work ‘on’, rather ‘in’, Mummu Sport.

What are your top three tips for starting a business?

  1. Keep your fixed costs to a minimum. Don’t pay for a fancy office, or fly business class, or even hire staff when you don’t need to.
  2. Try to be comfortable with change. Nothing will work the way you plan it. So, you need to embrace change, rather than fight it or become frustrated by it.
  3. Find and keep good people. With Mummu Sport, I’ve found that good staff are hard to find. So, when you do get them, make sure you keep them engaged in your plans.
