Meet Hong Kong-based Jennifer Webb. Founder and creative mind behind Blk Sheep Empire, a footwear brand based in Hong Kong which combines vibrant colour and prints to bring an explosion of colour and texture into footwear design. This is her entrepreneurial story.
Where did you get the idea for your business?
Blksheep means the odd one out, and sometimes odd things are where you find inspiration and style that you’re not used to. I wanted to make a line of footwear that really allows people to show off who they are and get in touch with their black sheep side. We use bright bold leathers in various prints and patterns. Our motto is “Kickass shoes for kickass women.”
How did you get your business started?
After graduating from RMIT with a major in Communication Design (Graphic Design) I went to Spain to learn about shoes. I worked at a shoe factory and it was there that I really got to know about shoes and fell in love with the industry.
What lessons have you learned so far on your business journey?
You don’t always succeed the first time. You learn from numerous mistakes. Numerous.
How important for you has it been to have a mentor?
I don’t have a mentor, but my husband is very supportive. I don’t think you need a mentor to guide you the whole way, but you need to have a support group of friends, family and pets! You can learn from inspirational people and be motivated by their stories and challenges.
What are your top 3 tips for starting a business?
- Passion – make sure you really want to do this.
- Determination, and the strength to keep going even if the shit hits the fan.
- Lastly, flexibility, be prepared for plan b’s, c’s, d’s and maybe an e.
